The Early Years Foundation Stage, delivered through play, and what a morning with us actually looks like.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
The Early Years Foundation Stage sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, pre-schools, nurseries and school reception classes.
The EYFS framework supports an integrated approach to early learning and care. It gives all professionals a set of common principles and commitments to deliver quality early education and childcare experiences to all children.
From September 2008 all providers have been required to use the EYFS to ensure that whatever setting parents choose, they can be confident that their child will receive a quality experience that supports development and learning.
The EYFS is based around four themes.
Positive Relationships
Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
Enabling Environments
Children learn and develop well in enabling environments in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners, parents and carers.
Learning and Development
Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.
Our sessions
From September 2026 our sessions are:
- Early start8.30am to 9am, every day
- Morning session without lunch9am to 12pm, every day
- Morning session with lunch9am to 1pm, every day
- Full day9am to 2.45pm, Monday and Wednesday
- Full day9am to 3.45pm, Tuesday and Thursday
- Afternoon session on its own11.45am to 2.45pm, Monday and Wednesday
- Afternoon session on its own11.45am or 12.45pm to 3.45pm, Tuesday and Thursday
How a typical morning works
Free flow play indoors and out with a few fixed points to hang the day on.
- 8.30am to 9amEarly start
- 8.50am to 9amDoors are open; children are registered on arrival
- 10am to around 10.30amsnack time
- 10.45amstory time
- 11am to 11.45amfree play
- 12pmsong time for children staying for lunch; home time for morning only children
- 12pm to 1pmlunch time
Adult led activities run throughout the morning and into the afternoon. Afternoons are more fluid and change from day to day.
